For the SEO novice, the seemingly huge list of what needs to be done, and when, can be almost overwhelming

Here a 12 steps to get you started on the road to better Organic Search Engine Results

  1. Your website ought to be about something you happen to have at least a strong interest (or even be an expert on!)
  2. A good plan of attack needs to be mapped out in advance, prior to you embarking on your marketing efforts
  3. Research the competition and keywords/keyphrases beforehand to determine how competitive your keyword/keyphrase choices are
  4. Decide what keywords/keyphrases you are planning to use before creating your website, and before you create each keyword oriented post/page, and include them within your meta tags , post/page copy, post/page title, and permalinks
  5. Your site needs to be simple to navigate and Search Engine friendly (use a sitemap)
  6. Every post/page ought to have a specific focus which is strongly and thoroughly maintained throughout.
  7. Send out Pings for your site regularly. There are many pinging services, but Ping-O-Matic and Pingoat are two of the best to get started with
  8. Socially bookmark each and every post/page you publish. Onlywire and SocialMarker are to services for doing this that are highly recommended
  9. Submit your website to Web Directories, either manually, or have a company that specializes in this do it for you (very time saving!)
  10. Build a linking campaign. (Link building stands out as the single most essential step to highly effective SEO)
  11. Repeat what steps you consider necessary until you attain top rankings in the Search Engines. This really is an ongoing process for most website owners (especially in competitive niches/markets)
  12. (Optional) Search for spam links in the results when entering your keywords/keyphrases into the Search Engines and report any spam results to the Search Engines. Some Search Engines actively edit their search results and you may be able to have spammy competitors removed.
